Langer Epistemology Errors (LEEs)

Langer Epistemology Errors are epistemological errors made when humans mistake abstractions for actual reality. They are so named in honor of Susanne K Langer, an American Philosopher who first quantified and codified the error in her 1948 book Philosophy In A New Key on page 74. These errors are neither trivial nor trite. Commission of these errors has been one of humanity’s most inhibiting factor. It is the single root cause for many, if not most, problems and challenges faced by civilization. Recognizing what are now called LEEs are now central in understanding how unification was accomplished.

Abstractions have a tendency to insulate and isolate higher ordered ideas from lower ordered details. The implication of that is perception of those lower ordered details may support more than a single logical conclusion. This is more than a trivial point and requires the Systems Engineering Body of Knowledge (SEBok) to truly unravel and bring into full relevance to a given investigation.

LEE’s Gate then is the decision block directly beneath the Recognition Process Block  in the Process Decision Checkpoing Flowchart below asking if Langer Epistemology Errors are being committed. This is a critical juncture in any investigation and it is vital in order to exercise critical situational awareness thinking. For example in chemistry and physics we use terms like proton, neutron, and electron all the time. Are those real or abstractions? Look at the Niels Bohr quote above before you answer. Many people think of them as real, but in fact those labels are of abstractions reflecting reality and it is important to understand the distinction between the two. We have a great deal of information on the reality those labels represent, but they are still abstractions reflecting reality. They are not the actual reality itself. Believing those are the actual real material object is commission of Langer Epistemology Errors or LEEs. Penetrating LEE’s Gate

Penetrating LEE’s Gate can be quite difficult and it may in fact require paradigm shifts for every investigator on your team; which may be more difficult than it might first seem. Be prepared for individuals vested in status quo thinking to transition through industry standard stages of grief exactly because they have spent a very long time believing they were working directly with reality rather than abstractions of it. These folks may take an inordinate amount of time to come to grips with Langer Epistemology Errors. Everyone should lead/participate in these transitions/paradigm shifts transformationally and with great empathy and compassion.

Is it ok to use abstractions? Absolutely, you just need to understand what they are philosophically and in a Systems Engineering Body of Knowledge (SEBoK) sense relative to the science being conducted. As long as you understand that abstractions are logical incarnations which reflect reality and you are able to keep your thinking compartmentalized along those corridors then you are not committing LEEs. Elegant Reasonism Rules hold that we never claim we are describing actual reality, but rather creating models which reflect that reality and the distinction matters a great deal. These issues are yet another reason that the insights developed consistent with the unified Universe as a matter of practicality should be presented in context of the process & methods used to derive them in order to epistemologically justify them.

P2.0: Illumination

The standard operating procedure employed across civilization centralizes knowledge management relative to and respective of institutionalized thinking. In our zeal to quantify and codify what it is we think we know, we left our humanity behind. We created institutionalized bastions of distribution and made global enterprises out of them. Accreditation agencies were established in an attempt to again quantify and codify what it is we expect students to learn, because that material is based on what it is we thought we knew. We rush to judge those explorers beyond those boundaries. John Archibald Wheeler angered many when he commented: “Everyone knows that the reason universities have students is to educate the professors”. Today, the network is driving education, learning, and entreprenurial quests beyond traditional bastioned boundaries. Military leaders have long recognized issues surrounding fixed fortifications. Resource logistics must be dynamic. Two key insight points from history:

  1. At the time Albert Einstein submitted his first papers in 1905 he was, more than anything else, an entrepreneur. He was employed as a patent clerk. He was not yet a PhD. He was not yet employed by any academic institution. He did not have tenure.
  2. At the time Charles C McGowen began working on the body of work culminating with SolREI INC filing Elegant Reasonism he too was, more than anything else: an entrepreneur. His father had recently passed and family requirements demanded he step up to care for his elderly mother. IBM had hired him as a sophomore from Auburn University where he was studying aerospace engineering and his 24+ year tenure at IBM had included global assignments with worldwide responsibilities spanning many disciplines. He was their first Internet Marketing Manager and first worldwide Internet Brand Manager. He was the worldwide marketing management knowledge management point of contact circa 1999. He participated in business process reengineering efforts, in several different domains of the business, and helped deploy IBM’s internal business planning systems/infrastructure. He has taught ‘man-rated’ education courses (e.g. someone could get killed or kill others if they did not learn to apply the material correctly). He is an FAA rated pilot. He has been a Realtor, Mortgage Broker, and an IBMer. Today he is Chairman & CEO of SolREI INC. He does not have a PhD, nor degree from any academic institution. He can however: read. He remains a loyal Auburn fan. War Damned Eagle! Friends had noted that had he not been isolated caring for his mom he likely would never have embarked on that systems review in the first place.

There are many lessons history can teach us all from these various events and circumstances:

  • Family matters and reality has a way of prioritizing what you can and can not do.
  • Necessity is often the mother of invention.
  • The source of inspiration often arises from heterogeneous detail sets from multidisciplinary (e.g. many different domains of discourse) immersions.  For example, Susanne K Langer’s 1948 book was a study in the symbolism of reason, rite, and art. It had nothing specifically to do with theoretical physics, but it wound up making a significant contribution to accomplishing unification. Go figure.
  • The largest “peer review pool” is all of humanity and it spans culture, geopolitical boundaries, ages, education and it assures that it will capture entrepreneurial insights that might otherwise be missed or ignored. Sometimes common sense just prevails. Parents know that from the mouth of babes very often comes penetrating truth.
  • It is what it is. We must now deal with it, cope, learn, adapt, and many will likely go through the stages of grief doing so. Consequently Elegant Reasonism should be wielded transformationally with great empathy and compassion.

Illuminating the various EIMs and construct manifestations (e.g. instantiation for those constructs) and the philosophical nature recognized entering science we must recognize the fundamental validity of assertions being asserted. This requires us to ask and answer some very difficult questions relative to and respective of the perspectives established by each EIM within a fully compliant and valid 2D Articulation Frame in preparation of the next phase of the process & methods leveraging fully compliant Translation Matrices.
